Away wi' the Fairies in the Springtime!

This is one of my most popular colourways at the moment: Away wi' the Fairies. I love it. There are only three basic dye colours in it, but they spread and run into each other and make lots more wonderful brights as the fibre dyes. This was done on Rambouillet, for me. One of my favourite ways of spinning a fine wool top is to break it off into staple lengths, wrap them round a thickish stick like a big knitting needle or a nostepinne, and then spin the resulting prep long draw, at speed. I don't call these rolags, as they're much denser than a true rolag and the wool fibres themselves are still in a combed aligned form. But the resulting yarn can be spun to a very high twist, pulls out to a fine yarn, and is much bouncier and more elastic than a true worsted/short draw-spun yarn. # I spent an entire evening making these punis. I split the top down the middle as evenly as possible, and as each staple length was pulled off I carefully wrapped it round a 10mm knitting needle...

The Great Glamorgan Sock Project!

I was teaching at Wonderwool Wales this year, which was fun, and because I didn't have a stall this year I had lots of lovely spare time to wander around the show and see what was what. And one thing I did spot was The Great Glamorgan Sock Project , which was fascinating to have a good prod around. The idea is to have socks spun and knitted from every breed of sheep currently living in Glamorgan. There seemed to be hundreds of pairs of socks hanging up, with information boards behind with details of the sheep, their wool, and the spinners and knitters. I got talking to the organiser, Jane Bissett, about what an excellent project this was, and how nice it would be to be involved if only I lived in Glamorgan! More pretty colours.

I've been at the camel and silk blend again. This time I've tweaked the dyeing of this particular blend slightly. It's one of the most difficult to ensure the dye penetrates all the way through, so I've dyed this batch in lots of 200g rather than 300, and made the dye solutions slightly more intense. I'm rather pleased. Red Leaf: Purple Ink: Guinevere: Dryad: White BFL/silk dyed in Silver Sky. Although this is atypical of my dyeing, it's been one of my most popular colourways. (Not worth dyeing on anything other than white fibre, though.) Oatmeal BFL/silk in Nightfall: Oatmeal BFL/silk in Birchbark: Oatmeal BFL, on its own and with silk, in Sunrise (a new colourway this year): Oatmeal BFL, alone and with silk, in Rivendell: Grey Shetland/silk, white BFL, white Devon Longwool, in Red Leaf: Same wools as above, in Lazuli: And the same, this time in Flora: These won't be going into the Etsy shop until after Wonderwool.
